How can we introduce visitors to Gentilini Winery ‘s profile?
The winery and vineyards have now passed to the next generation, bringing renewed energy and fresh ideas. As always, Gentilini produces top quality, exciting and unique wines while promoting the unique flavours and aromas of the local Kefalonian varieties. The island’s terroir and microclimate, which are affected by maritime and mountain breezes, give wines of superior character and quality. Needless to say, the island is famed for its unique Robola and Mavrodaphne…
Today Gentilini has 10 hectares under vine and makes a core range of seven wines. Quantities have purposefully been kept low to ensure that quality is not compromised, and about 30% of production is exported to America, Australia, France, Germany, Holland, Japan and Belgium.

Which two labels should visitors take with them, as a reminder of their visit?
The elegant white Robola and the intense red Eclipse.

Robola is the ambassador variety of Cephalonia. The grapes are cultivated in the mountainous areas of the island’s P.D.O. region and have very low yields per hectare. The wine’s colour is pale straw, with aromas of citrus, grapefruit and white peach balancing its minerality. It is fresh, crisp, balanced and complex and matches harmoniously with fish, seafood and white sauces.

Eclipse is produced from the local variety of Mavrodaphne whose grapes come from estate vineyards. The wine matures for 12 months in American and French barrels and is bottled unfiltered in limited quantities. It has a rich deep colour and aromas of ripe forest fruit, licorice and wild mint. In the mouth it is rich and complex with smooth tannins and a long aftertaste. It pairs exceptionally well with aged cheese, meat and game and is an important addition to any wine lover’s collection as it can age for many years.
Which are the highlights of the wider region that visitors should not miss?
The nearby village of Minies is graced with three beautiful sandy beaches; Spasmata, Megali Ammos and Eglina. Its proximity to Argostoli (7 km) makes it an ideal destination for those who wish to escape to quieter and less crowded beaches.
Some of the places visitors should definitely visit are the lake-cave of Melissani, the cave of Drogarati with its stalagmites and stalactites, the 16th century Venetian castle of St. George and, of course, the exceptionally picturesque village of Fiskardo.
As for accommodation, the Gentilini Retreat B&B, which is located near the castle of St. George, offers six individually decorated rooms, each with its own entrance and outside space. This 20 acre farm, with its ancient olive trees and cypress forest, is a perfect base from which to explore Cephalonia due to its central location. A delicious breakfast based on the farm’s produce is served daily and guests enjoy free tastings and special discounts at the Gentilini Winery.
